Chelsea legend Petr Cech has hinted that despite his poor goal return, £97.5 million flop Romelu Lukaku will not be allowed to leave west London this summer.
Petr Cech has suggested that Chelsea flop Romelu Lukaku will not be allowed to leave during the upcoming transfer window because he still has a future at Stamford Bridge.
The Belgian forward, 29, became the Blues’ record signing after the west London club paid a whopping £97.5 million to sign him from Serie A champions Inter Milan. Due to financial difficulties, the Nerazzurri shipped out high-earners Lukaku, Achraf Hakimi, and Matteo Politano, as well as manager Antonio Conte, after delivering their first scudetto in 11 seasons.
Lukaku was named Serie A’s most valuable player for the 2020/21 season after scoring 64 goals in 90 appearances for Inter and was widely expected to continue his red-hot form in the English Premier League.
However, during a turbulent season back at Stamford Bridge, the 29-year-old scored just eight goals in his Premier League return. The Belgian gave a viral interview about his love for Inter, sparking rumors of a summer return to Milan – but Chelsea legend Cech has hinted Lukaku is not leaving.
“I personally believe he will have a great season,” Cech, who is also Chelsea’s Technical And Performance Advisor, told Sky Sports. We saw how strong he can be at the beginning of last season when he arrived. Unfortunately, the long-term injury he suffered in the game against Aston Villa slowed things down, and then he got Covid.
“We could see how strong he is at the end of the season when he was fit and ready to go.” As a team, we had a particular season around Christmas with Covid, and he was one of those affected. I am confident he will recover and have a productive season.”
