Manchester United is reportedly planning to sell Anthony Martial in order to raise finances for other acquisitions, including the cost of a new striker, according to reporter James Ducker. The 26-year-old is unlikely to attract a huge sum, but with Frenkie de Jong expected to cost a lot of money, the Red Devils will need every euro they can get to keep reinventing the squad.
Martial was once regarded as one of Manchester’s most promising young players. He was considered a possible long-term striker option after moving from AS Monaco to Manchester United.
Early on, the French striker delivered, netting 17 goals in his first season with the club, 11 of which came in the Premier League. The following season, he only scored eight goals in all competitions.
Martial had a minor comeback in the following seasons, scoring 11 goals in 2017/18 and 12 in 2018/19 before having a fantastic return to form in 2019/20, scoring 23 goals for Manchester United. This would be Martial’s last season in which he scored more than ten goals.
The 26-year-23-goal old’s season was followed by a meager seven goals the following year. After just scoring once in 11 games in what could be his final season in a red shirt, Martial was loaned out to Sevilla.
This loan to Sevilla has been viewed as one last opportunity for the former prospect to reclaim his best form and prove to new manager Erik ten Hag that he deserved a place in his squad. In his 12 appearances for Sevilla, the Frenchman only managed one goal in an ultimately dismal time with the Spanish club.
