Manchester United has released their best 20-man squad for the weekend’s match against Brighton.
Manchester United host Brighton at Old Trafford to kick off the new Premier League season this weekend. Erik ten Hag will be hoping to get off to the best possible start by scoring three points on the first attempt.
A win could be crucial in setting the tone for the rest of the season, and with games against Liverpool and Arsenal coming up in the first six games, it’s critical they get off to a good start.
Ten Hag’s side showed some signs of progress this summer, but after two disappointing results to end pre-season, the real-time for talking comes now.
The new United manager will be hoping to have the strongest side available to him for the match, with a few selections scares ahead of the opener.
Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho both missed the weekend defeat by Atletico Madrid through illness, while forward Anthony Martial limped out of the match with a knock
In an ideal world, all three of them would be back this weekend, with Sancho and Martial expected to start as part of the forward line if they are fit. Shaw was penciled in to be the starting left-back this season, but his place is under threat after an excellent pre-season for new signing Tyrell Malacia.
Harry Maguire will captain the side and if up to speed, he could be joined by new recruit Lisandro Martinez. If not, then Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane will be competing for the second center-back role.
It seems certain that Fred and Scott McTominay will keep their places in the heart of midfield, and Ten Hag will hope to have Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen available for some extra firepower on the bench.
They could be joined there by Cristiano Ronaldo, who is not expected to start against Brighton but might be needed in reserve given the lack of options available. It would also make sense to add another attacker to the squad, with Amad picked ahead of Alejandro Garnacho given his ability to play on the right wing.
United’s strongest squad to face Brighton: De Gea, Heaton; Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Varane, Martinez, Malacia, Shaw; Fred, McTominay, Van de Beek, Eriksen, Fernandes; Sancho, Rashford, Martial, Amad, Ronaldo.
