Manchester United has been linked with Flamengo’s Joao Gomes for some time now, and the Brazilian is back in the spotlight.
According to reports from March, the Red Devils were willing to offer around £33 million to sign the midfielder, but he could cost up to £50 million (Diario do Fla).
According to a story published by Calcio Mercato yesterday, Man Utd have set their sights on finally signing the 21-year-old starlet.
The famous Italian media outlet has claimed that even arch-rivals Liverpool, who desperately need to improve their midfield, are interested in luring the youngster in the January transfer window.
Gomes has already made over 100 appearances for Flamengo and forms a top midfield partnership with Thiago Maia.
He has already won the Brazilian Serie A and the Super Copa do Brazil with the South American side, who do not want to lose their prized asset.
Reports (via Paisley Gates) have suggested that the midfielder, who will be out of contract in over three years, has already turned down multiple contract extensions and after the latest rejection, Flamengo is looking to offload him.
Gomes is mainly a play breaker, a position that United had to reinforce in the last transfer window and they did by bringing in Casemiro from Real Madrid.
So, for now, the Old Trafford outfit does not really need to move in to lure another defensive midfielder. What do you think?
