Erik ten Hag joins Barcelona as a midfield target with a £56 million January departure clause.
Barcelona manager Xavi is said to be a huge fan of the 23-year-old midfielder and wants to lure him to the Nou Camp, but United are now being tipped to make their own move.
Zubimendi, a Spain international, has extended his contract through 2027, which now contains a €60 million release clause. However, for the winter market, that clause is increased to €65m (£56m).
While the midfielder’s contract extension makes a January move unlikely, it is not impossible.
Ten Hag is actively aiming to add to his roster in the coming year. However, with Cristiano Ronaldo‘s acrimonious departure, the main focus of attention is now on a new striker.
Zubimendi‘s income could increase dramatically if he moves to Old Trafford, which worries Sociedad.
However, Mundo adds that the Spanish team is resolute to maintain its stance on the escape provision.
If that’s the case, it’s unlikely that United will be willing to pay that sum, especially given Ten Hag’s other needs.
The Red Devils’ midfield is not without strength, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen establishing a formidable pairing. Scott McTominay and Fred are among those waiting in the wings.
In 16 appearances for Sociedad this season, Zubimendi has scored once and provided two assists.
He has also represented Spain five times but is not included in their World Cup team for Qatar.
