Despite his poor recent record, new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has yet to choose his captain for the new season, with Harry Maguire now holding the armband. Harry Maguire will hold showdown discussions with Erik Ten Hag in a bid to save his position as captain.
Maguire had a bad season with United, where he was labeled the scapegoat for the team’s poor performance. After finishing sixth in the Premier League, United failed to win silverware and missed out on Champions League qualification. Maguire’s performance was questioned, and some United fans demanded that he be replaced as captain.
Following the end of the season, the England defender linked up with Gareth Southgate‘s side, but he has yet to sit down and chat with new United manager Ten Hag.
But he is adamant about keeping the captain’s armband, and when he returns to pre-season training, he will discuss his status in the team with the Dutchman.
Ten Hag has spent the previous several weeks watching videos of United’s games from last season in order to get to know his team and assess individual strengths and shortcomings.
It’ll be interesting to see if he sticks with Maguire, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, David De Gea, and Raphael Varane all being possible choices if Ten Hag decides to make a change.
Due to his engagement with England, Maguire has been advised he can return to pre-season training later than the rest of the group.
Ten Hag has ordered his players to return to Carrington on June 27 for severe fitness tests, although Maguire will be given up to two weeks’ leeway, despite the fact that he is anticipated to play on United’s tour.
