Matheus Cunha, a Brazilian player with a £42 million price tag and a girlfriend who is a lawyer from his country, is reportedly “close” to leaving Atletico Madrid for Manchester United.
According to talkSPORT, Manchester United’s poor start to the season has forced them to make a move in the transfer market, and they are “on the verge” of signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Matheus Cunha.
The 23-year-old Brazilian, who had previously played for RB Leipzig under former United manager Ralf Rangnick, was only signed by Atletico last summer after leaving German club Hertha Berlin. The German may have mentioned Cunha’s name while filling in temporarily, and curiosity has persisted.
The report states that Atletico is holding out for £42million to allow Cunha to leave, with the Brazilian scoring six goals in 29 La Liga appearances last season. Cunha is a versatile attacker that can also play in the midfield and is certainly appreciated off the field by his girlfriend who regularly attends games at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Cunha is dating Brazilian lover Gabriela Nogueira, who is from Rio De Janeiro and works as a lawyer. His girlfriend has followed him throughout his footballing ventures, and regularly posts pictures on social media watching her partner while in the stands.
Should Cunha join United, it’s likely her viewing pleasure will be lessened with Atletico making a winning start to their La Liga season on Monday, while United is rock bottom of the Premier League. A brace from Alvaro Morata and a late Antoine Griezmann strike sealed a comfortable 3-0 away win for Atletico, as they beat Getafe.
Cunha was part of the side that got off to the perfect side, but it’s yet to be seen if he’ll continue with Atletico. United is not as much of an attractive proposition as it once was, but it’s still expected that the tide will turn at some point.
It’s been a nightmare start for Erik ten Hag, who has lost his opening two Premier League matches in charge at United. The last time the Red Devils remained on zero points after their first two games of the season was back in 1992.
That season, they went on to win the league, but not even the most upbeat supporters are holding out hope for that to happen. They have yet to score a goal of their own as well; the only goal the Red Devils have scored this season is an own goal by Alexis MacAllister.
Cunha, however, is thought to be the one who can make a difference, and it’s possible that the Brazilian and his girlfriend will soon be in Manchester. Cunha reportedly wants to engage in direct talks with Atletico because doing so could increase his chances of being selected for the Brazil team ahead of the World Cup.
