Cristiano Ronaldo responded to allegations that he is determined about leaving Manchester United with an angry social media statement.
The Portugal international stunned the Red Devils earlier this summer when he stated his desire to join a team competing in the Champions League next season. Due to personal circumstances, he was unable to accompany his teammates on United’s pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia.
Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes returned to United’s Carrington training base on Tuesday for crunch meetings with Erik ten Hag. Sir Alex Ferguson was at the base, although it’s unclear whether he talked with the 37-year-old.
United wants to retain Ronaldo’s services for another season, per his contract, and has ruled out selling him to a rival club.
Ronaldo is reportedly sticking to his guns and wants to secure a move elsewhere, although he suggested he isn’t as desperate to leave United as has been made out.
A fan post discussing the Ronaldo saga on Instagram prompted a response from the Portugal international – marking the first time he has publicly addressed the rumors surrounding him.
The story stated: “Cristiano Ronaldo is determined about leaving, according to Jorge Mendes, although Mendes left negotiations doubtful that Ronaldo would obtain his move. Sir Alex Ferguson has stepped in. Ronaldo, according to United, is not for sale.”
Ronaldo replied: “It’s impossible not to mention me one day. Otherwise, the press is bankrupt. You understand that if you don’t lie, you won’t be able to get people’s attention. Continue to hope that one day you may receive some good news.”
United has yet to receive a bid for Ronaldo, with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid ruling themselves out.
