Reece James was chastised on Twitter for having “zero football knowledge” after claiming Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi.
On Wednesday, the Chelsea and England defender, who is out of the World Cup due to injury, took part in an online Q&A with supporters.
However, James’ response to the Ronaldo or Messi question was not warmly received.
One Twitter user wrote: ‘You have zero football knowledge.
Another joked that James’ response shows why Trent Alexander-Arnold is better than him. They wrote: ‘This is why Trent is better than you!’.
Another added: ‘Overrated player supporting another overrated player. We understand.
James also answered other questions, including one of the toughest opponents that he has faced in his career so far.
The 22-year-old selected three left-wingers: Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, and Sadio Mane, currently of Bayern Munich.
‘The three hardest players I’ve ever played against are all left-wingers,’ James wrote. ‘Vinicius Junior, Leao, and Mane!’
James had hoped to be named to England’s World Cup squad, but a serious knee injury dashed those hopes.
It is hoped that James will be ready soon as club football resumes at the end of this month.
