Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s superstar forward, will not go to Switzerland for their Nations League match on Sunday.
The Manchester United forward has already scored twice against Switzerland this international window, in a 4-0 win last weekend, but he will miss the return match in Geneva.
Thankfully, Portugal manager Fernando Santos has stated that Ronaldo is not hurt and is only resting alongside Borussia Dortmund full-back Raphael Guerreiro and Wolves midfielder Joao Moutinho.
Santos stated of the trio’s absence, “There are no physical problems.” “This is standard management.”
“It wouldn’t make sense for us to travel with 26 players if we can only play 23.” It was entirely up to these players to miss out.”
Last weekend in Lisbon, Ronaldo made his Nations League debut, scoring two goals in four first-half minutes against the Swiss.
Following William Carvalho‘s opener, the veteran was teed up by Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and swept a finish into the back of the net inside the area, before being on hand to tap home after Jota’s effort was parried by the goalie, making it 3-0 before half-time.
Portugal currently leads Group A2 with seven points from three games, having only lost points against Spain. In 2019, the Selecao took first place in the first competition.
