With add-ons, the fee for Argentina’s international defender might reach €67 million.
Manchester United has signed Argentina defender Lisandro Martnez from Ajax on a contract until June 2027. Ajax stated that the guaranteed fee was €57.37 million, with a possible increase to €67.37 million with add-ons.
Martnez was an Ajax player under Erik ten Hag and is United manager Jose Mourinho’s third signing following Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen. United is still interested in Ajax forward Anthony, as well as Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Martínez, a left-sided center-back who can also operate as a defensive midfielder or at left-back, has won the Dutch league the past two seasons. The 24-year-old has seven caps.
He told United’s website: “It’s an honor to join this great football club. I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment and, now that I’m here, I’m going to push myself even further.
“I’ve been fortunate to be a member of successful teams throughout my career, and that’s something I hope to continue at Manchester United.” There will be a lot of effort to get there, but I am confident that we can achieve it under this manager and coaches, as well as with my new teammates.
“I’d want to thank Ajax and their fans for their unwavering support.” I had an incredible time there, but I believe the time has come for me to put my skills to the test in a different setting. Now I’m at the ideal club to do this.” – Protector
