Following Erik ten Hag‘s praise of the player, Harry Maguire has been advised to be more brutal as a defender and that he needs “more devil in him.”
The Dutchman, who provided an update on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future on Monday, drew most of the attention, but Ten Hag also made it official that Harry Maguire would serve as captain for the upcoming season.
Bad form in the 2021/22 season had suggested Maguire could be relieved of his duties as captain, however, Ten Hag put those rumours to bed on Monday.
“I’d like to see a bit more ruthlessness about the way he defends. I’d like to see something a bit more devil in him in the way he defends.”
The United centre-back endured some poor performances last season, getting caught out on numerous occasions and often unable to keep up with the pace of his opponents’ attacks.
And as such, Maguire faced a lot of criticism from fans, pundits and social media.
But Townsend says there’s a blueprint Maguire can follow to be the captain ten Hag will want him to be.
The news of Maguire keeping the armband comes after another below-par season for United in which they finished sixth and suffered some embarrassing defeats, including 4-0 and 5-0 thrashings against rivals Liverpool.
Of course, United’s problems can’t all be pinned on Maguire. However, the captaincy appointment does often have an impact on the success of a side.
Townsend also stated that whilst it was the right thing to keep the England defender in the role, he needs to up his game next season after some ‘laboured’ performances last year.
“I think there’s no question he’s a talented lad and a good footballer, of course, he is,” the former Chelsea player began on Drive.
