In addition to hoping Joe Gomez would sign a new contract with the club, Liverpool is in contract negotiations with Naby Keita.
Keita made 14 Premier League starts last season, while Gomez only made four in the top division. Neither player was a fixture in the starting XI.
However, the midfielder earned 40 games across all leagues, compared to the England international’s 21, who was demoted after Ibrahima Konate was signed.
Liverpool plainly believes both players have vital roles to play at the club despite being on the outside of the first team, as evidenced by the upcoming renewal of their contracts.
With Keita’s current contract scheduled to expire the next year, The Athletic reports that talks are still going on with him. The midfielder is still a favorite of Jurgen Klopp, and with no new additions to the central midfield this summer, he will play a role in the upcoming campaign.
Although the rumor does not imply that talks with Gomez have started yet, there is less urgency to reach an agreement because his current contract is good until 2024.
With only 10 Premier League starts over the last two seasons, Gomez is eager to play more frequently, but the Reds want to cling onto the 25-year-old.
Although the former Charlton player’s position is primarily at center back, he is more than capable of filling in at right or even on the left side of the defense.
According to The Athletic’s story, Gomez might leave the team if a large offer came in, but it would cost a hefty sum.
