Hassan Shehata, the former Egypt coach, claimed that Mohamed Salah “contributed nothing to the national team” as he grieved his departure from the national squad.
Between 2006 and 2010, Shehata guided his country to three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations victories, a record that currently stands. Despite this, the country has failed to qualify for the last six tournaments, losing in the finals in 2017 and 2021. Both of those defeats were witnessed by Liverpool‘s Mohamed Salah.
Cameroon stopped them five years ago, and Sadio Mane‘s Senegal stopped them more recently, so Salah remains without an international crown. At Anfield, he’s had a fantastic career, winning domestic and European titles as well as individual honors.
As a result, Shehata has questioned Salah’s accomplishments, as well as the appointment of current boss Carlos Queiroz, who was appointed because of a link to Salah.
“I have been out of the picture for a while and I don’t know why,” he remarked on the Sada El-Balad TV channel. When you consider it, I won three consecutive AFCON titles before being fired, and after that, I was treated as if my days were numbered. Foreign coaches are given all they desire, are well compensated, and receive everything they request.
“Ehab Galal assumed command at an inconvenient moment, with insufficient time to train his players. I hope he doesn’t lose faith; in these conditions, no other manager would have succeeded.
“The player is Mohamed Salah, and I wasn’t convinced from the start about choosing Queiroz,”. Salah is a fantastic player who has accomplished a lot abroad and is one of the world’s top players. However, he accomplished little for Egypt’s national team, and he should have done more.”
Salah’s international difficulties have only worsened since the African Cup of Nations, following Egypt’s failure to qualify for the World Cup this winter. In qualification, they were defeated by Senegal once more, with Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard missing a penalty kick in a shootout.
“I am honored that I played with you and I am extremely proud to play with you whether I am with you or not in the future,” Salah said, stoking speculation that he may call time on his Egypt career. With the next Africa Cup of Nations being held in the Ivory Coast in 2023, the forward will have an opportunity to redeem himself.
