six-time victor Lionel Messi has not received a Ballon d’Or nomination for the first time in 17 years.
Messi failed to make the cut for the first time since 2005 when France Football unveiled the 30-man shortlist for the most esteemed individual accolade in football on Friday.
Cristiano Ronaldo, a longtime adversary, was also selected, but Messi’s challenging time at Paris Saint-Germain seems to have coincided with the hitherto inconceivable. Another PSG teammate, Neymar, was not included.
16 of the 30 nominees are Premier League players, making up the majority of the list.
