Manchester City has been named Club of the Year, beating out Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Manchester City won the ‘Club of the Year award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony for 2022, beating out Liverpool and Real Madrid, who finished second and third, respectively. A few members of the City’s management attended the ceremony, as did Kevin de Bruyne and Ederson.
Last season, Pep Guardiola‘s team won the Premier League title by a single point over Liverpool. Despite coming so close, the Reds were successful in other domestic competitions, winning both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
The Merseysiders were largely successful in Europe as well but ended up on the losing side in the final against Real Madrid by a 1-0 scoreline.
As far as individual awards are concerned, Karim Benzema won the Ballon d’Or with Sadio Mane, Kevin de Bruyne, and Robert Lewandowski in line with him for the same. Alexia Puttelas won the Ballon d’Or Féminin.
Apart from Sadio Mane, who played for Liverpool for the entirety of last season, only Mohamed Salah made the top five. Fabinho was ranked 14th. Virgil van Dijk and Luis Diaz finished 16th and 17th respectively. Trent Alexander-Arnold was 22nd and Darwin Nunez was 25th.
With all due respect, one would have backed Liverpool to have a better finish over Manchester City. As earlier mentioned, two domestic trophies, the European final and lost the league by a whisker
Real Madrid was more favored than any other club as they won both, their league and the UEFA Champions League. Nevertheless, the awards were on the basis of nominations across all categories, and rightfully going by that point, City is the deserved winner.
