According to TNT Sports, Liverpool is eyeing a surprise deal for PSG midfielder Leandro Paredes as questions over Naby Keita mount after he was left out of Monday’s loss to Liverpool due to injury.
Keita was left out of the team for the 2-1 loss to Manchester United because his contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season. After the game, Jurgen Klopp merely stated, “he collapsed.” Liverpool, injury or not, requires another midfielder.
The club is now rumored to be considering a late move for Paredes. The 28-year-old is a bit of a periphery player at PSG, trailing the likes of Marco Verratti and new arrival Vitinha. He is under contract until 2024.
PSG has played four games this season so far. While the 44-time Argentina international has featured in all four, all of his appearances have come from the bench. Clearly, the £148k-a-week midfielder needs to leave the club.
The report claims that Liverpool has ‘indicated their interest’ in Paredes. However, they are not alone in pursuit of the ex-Zenit midfielder – with Juventus making an offer. It would see Juve raid PSG a second time, after Angel Di Maria.
LIVERPOOL TARGETING SURPRISE PAREDES MOVE AS DOUBTS GROW REGARDING KEITA
Whatever the situation regarding Keita, Liverpool needs a midfielder like Paredes. Injured or fit. They need more depth in the middle of the park – finally replacing Gini Wijnaldum who of course, moved to PSG last summer with Paredes.
Liverpool started a makeshift midfield of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Harvey Elliott on Monday. Fabinho was on the bench, possibly because he wasn’t entirely fit. Thiago is still out due to a muscular ailment. Liverpool requires depth.
Paredes is the type of player that can fill in for Fabinho in the holding role. However, he is more than capable of playing slightly further forward. He assisted on 26 goals in 61 games with Zenit. At this late stage, this is a good signing for Liverpool.
