Manchester City vs. Liverpool team news: Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez are in line for the Community Shield start, but Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Aymeric Laporte are all injured.
The Community Shield between Manchester City and Liverpool at the King Power Stadium kicks off the 2022/23 season on Saturday.
City and the Reds were by far the greatest teams in the country last season, so it’s only fair that they get to take part in the traditional curtain-raiser.
The Citizens won the Premier League, and the Reds won the FA Cup.
However, with injuries, fitness, and new additions influencing managers Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s options, both sides might look significantly different from last season.
As a result, talkSPORT.com decided to examine the most recent team news from both camps.
City of Manchester
Manchester City has had a busy summer, with four new arrivals and the departure of a few key players.
Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, and Oleksandr Zinchenko are no longer at City, while Kalvin Phillips, Erling Haaland, Stefan Ortega, and Julian Alvarez have joined.
Haaland scored just minutes into his debut and could lead the line in Leicester.
Meanwhile, Alvarez and Phillips will probably be involved but might not be in Guardiola’s starting XI.
Given it’s technically a friendly, the boss might choose to play Ortega rather than Ederson in goal.
There have also been a few changes at Anfield, with forwarding Sadio Mane the major departure.
Mane was an integral part of Klopp’s team but Darwin Nunez looks like an excellent replacement.
The Reds have shelled out £85m on the Uruguayan forward, and with Diogo Jota injured, he will probably start against City.
Roberto Firmino is another option for the Reds, but it would be a surprise if Klopp didn’t play Nunez, given his involvement in pre-season.
Fellow new signing Fabio Carvalho could also play a part, but Calvin Ramsay is likely to miss out because he hasn’t played a game since joining Aberdeen.
There are also injury concerns for midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and goalkeepers Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is out with a hamstring problem, while Alisson has had an abdominal injury that has ruled him out of Liverpool’s last two pre-season matches.
This means Adrian could start in goal for the Reds at the King Power.
Jurgen Klopp has detailed a fresh injury concern for Liverpool after their 1-0 defeat to RB Salzburg on Wednesday.
Benjamin Sesko scored the only goal of the game for the Austrian side as the Merseyside club played their final match ahead of Saturday’s Community Shield against Manchester City. Ahead of the match at the King Power Stadium which pits the Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners, Klopp explained that a further player was a doubt for the weekend.
