John Houlding, the club’s founder, obtained the following certificate from the Board of Trade on this day in 1892, confirming the existence of his newly created side to play at Anfield.
The process of forming Liverpool FC began in March 1892, when Houlding and his close companions broke away from Everton FC after a bitter feud, forming a new club that would call Anfield home.
“That the club be known as Liverpool Football Club and shall play under the Rules of the Football Association,” the mission statement read.
Houlding and his companions were informed that Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited had been officially recognized after a three-month delay.
It was the start of England’s most successful football club.
In the 130 years since, the men’s squad has won 50 major titles, including two in the last 12 months by Jürgen Klopp’s side – the Carabao Cup and the Emirates FA Cup.
To commemorate the 130th anniversary, a variety of events will be held throughout the month.
Throughout June, there will be a countdown of the club’s 130 greatest goals, picked and graded according to quality, importance, iconic status, and lasting legacy.
A fan survey will then determine the top ten strikes in Red’s history.
From June 1 to June 23, Stadium Tours is happy to give fans the chance to join the Anfield Origins Tour for a limited time (excluding concert days).
Around Anfield, visitors will be able to explore and experience 130 years of hidden history. Here is where you can reserve a spot on these limited-edition tours.
Red Neighbours, the club’s community program, has also created a series of 130 themed physical activity plans that will be pushed out across their regular fitness programs in the Anfield and Kirkby communities.
